On Earth Day, We Thank Our LED Customers
In honor of this year’s Earth Day, we thought we’d remind our customers what a great thing they’re doing for the planet by buying LED products. You may know the basics: LED lights are durable and designed to last up to 50 times longer than traditional bulbs, which means less waste being recycled or tossed in the landfill. LED lights can also save up to 85 percent of the energy gobbled up by incandescent bulbs, and up to 50 percent of the energy used by fluorescents.
That’s in large part because much of the energy used by incandescent bulbs is “wasted” to produce heat instead of light. That’s why incandescent bulbs burn hot, while LED bulbs are cool to the touch (and safer as well.) For a demonstration of the difference, watch this video from LED manufacturer Cree that exposes two chocolate bunnies to one traditional light and an LED light. Which bunny would you rather eat?
More seriously, though, LED lights have a huge potential to save energy, reduce the country’s carbon footprint and save people a lot of money. As this report from the U.S. Department of Energy found, switching the nation’s lighting inventory to LEDs by 2030 would in that year alone:
- Save enough energy to remove the need for 24 large power plants to operate
save $15 billion
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 31.4 million metric tons of carbon
- Conserve enough energy to power 95 million American homes
From 2010 to 2030, the cumulative effect of the switch would:
- Save enough energy to reduce the need for 189 power plants
- Save $120 billion
- Reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 246 million metric tons of carbon
Of course, those projections won’t ever happen without people making a conscious choice. So today, we officially thank you for doing your part, by investing in LED lights that will lead to a brighter, and greener, energy future. And as an incentive to help you make the switch we are offering 35% off all of our energy-efficient and earth friendly LED Christmas lights from now until midnight PST on Monday, April 23, 2012. *To obtain your discount simply use coupon code EDAY35 at checkout.
